Trump says he and von der Leyen agreed Iran must never get a nuclear weapon, warns EU on tariffs

Donald Trump said he held a call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen focused on Iran and ongoing U.S.–EU trade talks, warning he could raise tariffs if the bloc fails to meet what he described as prior commitments.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the two were “fully united” that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon and called it a “great conversation.” Meanwhile, Iran continues to review “messages” from the United States via Pakistani intermediaries and has not finalized a position.
Trump also said he pressed von der Leyen on what he called a “historic trade deal” reached in Turnberry last year. “I have patiently waited for the EU to fulfill its side of the Historic Trade Deal we agreed to in Turnberry, Scotland, the greatest trade deal of all time,” he wrote, adding that the EU had, according to him, pledged to reduce its tariffs to zero.
He said he had agreed to give the European Union a deadline running up to the 250th anniversary of the United States before raising tariffs “to much higher levels.” It remains unclear under what authority Trump could impose such tariffs, given a Supreme Court decision that struck down his tariff policy earlier this year.
