NCPA’s Mudra Festival 2026 spotlights young classical dancers, debuts interschool contest

The 2026 Mudra Dance Festival wrapped up at Mumbai’s National Centre for the Performing Arts with a clear focus on nurturing young talent, culminating in NCPA’s first interschool competition. Held over several days in April, the event drew participation from over 75 schools, encouraging students to engage with India’s classical dance traditions.
Performances spanned a wide range of Indian dance styles, giving students a platform to present their skills before seasoned practitioners. Themes ranged from traditional to contemporary, reflecting both the depth of the classical canon and its adaptability for new audiences.
The festival was appreciated for integrating the arts into education and encouraging schools to place classical dance alongside academic and sports pursuits. Organisers underscored the value of early engagement, highlighting how exposure to classical forms can deepen cultural understanding and discipline.
According to NCPA, the initiatives linked to the festival aim to strengthen future generations’ connection with India’s artistic heritage, illustrating that these ancient traditions continue to evolve and thrive.
