MyHeritage research links Sir David Attenborough to Charles Darwin as distant cousins
Sir David Attenborough has been linked to Charles Darwin as a distant cousin, according to new research released on the broadcaster’s 100th birthday. Family history platform MyHeritage says Attenborough and Darwin are ninth cousins, three times removed. The company’s researchers traced the connection to John Gifford Sr.
and Joan Brydges Gifford, members of 16th‑century English gentry who lived at the manor of Itchell in Crondall, Hampshire. Their daughters, Anne and Mary Gifford, mark the split in the family line: Anne is cited as a direct ancestor of Attenborough, while Mary is cited as a direct ancestor of Darwin.
The link aligns two towering figures of natural history: Darwin, whose 1859 work On the Origin of Species set out the theory of evolution by natural selection, and Attenborough, who has spent more than seven decades bringing the story of life on Earth to global audiences.
Attenborough has previously said Darwin “inspires me because he made sense out of the natural world” and presented the BBC documentary Charles Darwin and the Tree of Life to mark the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth. “As we celebrate David Attenborough’s 100th birthday, our team at MyHeritage sought to bridge the gap between two titans of natural history,” said Roi Mandel, the company’s Director of Research.
“By exploring a potential link to Charles Darwin, we honor David’s legacy as the true modern heir to the theory of evolution.
This fascinating connection serves as a powerful reminder that humanity is ultimately one vast family tree.” In a message on the eve of his centenary, Attenborough said he had intended a quiet celebration but had been “completely overwhelmed by birthday greetings, from pre-school groups to care home residents, and countless individuals and families of all ages.” He added: “I simply can’t reply to each of you separately, but I’d like to thank you all most sincerely for your kind messages, and wish those of you who have planned your own local events: Have a very happy day.” Attenborough is expected to mark the milestone at a special concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
